#9 Field Hockey Falls at #18 Penn State in Overtime, 2-1

The ninth-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday, falling to 18th-ranked Penn State, 2-1, in overtime at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday, falling to 18th-ranked Penn State, 2-1, in overtime at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Penn State (2-1) opened the scoring midway through the first quarter as Anouk Knuvers scored on a penalty corner opportunity.
 
• Saint Joseph's (2-1) capitalized on a Nittany Lion turnover in the final minute of the first quarter to draw level.  Alison Buffington pounced on a mishandled backpass and moved down the endline, finding Ava Smith in front of the cage for the equalizer.
 
• The Nittany Lions had a chance to return the favor late in the third, but Paige Kieft turned away a shot after a Hawk turnover to keep things level heading into the fourth.
 
• After a scoreless fourth, Penn State got the winner six minutes into overtime as Olivia Marthins deflected a long ball into the cage after a counterattack.
 
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Kieft finished with four saves on the day while Aby Deverka made two for Penn State.
 
• Penn State held a 9-8 advantage in shots after notching the only attempt in the extra period.  The Hawks earned six corners to three for the Nittany Lions.
