Field Hockey Falls to Penn, 3-2

MERION STATION, Pa. – A late goal in the fourth quarter led Penn past the Saint Joseph's field hockey team, 3-2, at Ellen Ryan Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (8-9) jumped out to an early lead as Carly Hynd jammed home a loose ball just four and a half minutes into the game.
 
• Three minutes later, Ava Smith dribbled across the circle, rounded a defender, and fired low for her team-leading 15th goal of the season and a 2-0 Hawk lead.
 
• The Quakers answered with two and a half minutes to go in the quarter through a rebound goal from Julia Ryan.
 
• Penn (8-6) drew level late in the second as Philene Klas scored on a corner.
 
• Neither team could break the deadlock until less than six minutes remained when Ryan evaded a defender after a long pass and fired home what turned out to be the game-winner.
 
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
Paige Kieft made six saves in the cage for the Hawks while Ruby de Frees made four for the Quakers.
 
• Penn held an 11-8 advantage in shots and earned seven corners while the Hawks had just one.
