Baseball Falls to George Mason to End A-10 Championship Run
TYSONS, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team put forth a valiant comeback effort, but ultimately fell to second-seeded George Mason, 11-7, on Thursday in an elimination game at the 2025 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Capital One Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• George Mason (38-20) opened the scoring in the top of the first on a single by James Quinn-Irons and a fielder's choice ground ball by Jake Butler.
• The Patriots added to the lead in the second on a wild pitch, a two-run single followed by an error, and a two-run home run. They then added three in the fourth on a single, a steal of home, and a balk.
• Saint Joseph's (24-28) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Joey Pagano led off the inning with a single before a walk to Blake Primrose and a single by Tim Dickinson loaded the bases; Carson Applegate followed with a single to score Pagano and make it an 11-1 game.
• Alex Kelsey then led off the fifth with a solo home run to right before a cavalcade of walks loaded the bases and allowed Owen Petrich to score on a wild pitch. Another walk reloaded the bases for Aidan Duda, who cashed in his first home run as a Hawk in style with a grand slam to cut the deficit to 11-7.
• The Hawks would have opportunities to draw closer, but the Patriots turned a pair of double plays in the late innings to thwart the Hawk rallies.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The game was delayed by an hour and 11 minutes in the bottom of the first inning due to lightning strikes detected in the area.
• Logan Rumberg worked four innings of shutout relief to earn the win for George Mason, while Nathan Stein took the loss after being charged with eight runs in an inning and two-thirds. Matt Fitzgibbon pitched three and a third strong innings in relief, allowing just two base runners to help keep the Hawks in striking distance in the late innings.
• Pagano and Dickinson recorded multi-hit games for the Hawks, while the grand slam gave Duda a season-high four runs batted in in the game.
• The loss ends the Hawks' postseason run. Saint Joseph's recorded 20 wins for the 14th consecutive full season, posted a winning record in conference play for the sixth consecutive full season, and reached the Atlantic 10 Championship for the fifth consecutive season, the only school in the league to reach the postseason in each of the last five seasons.
