Scott Boches Joins Baseball Coaching Staff
MERION STATION, Pa. – Saint Joseph's baseball head coach Fritz Hamburg has announced the addition of Scott Boches to the Hawks' coaching staff in time for the 2026 season. Boches will serve as the Hawks' pitching coach.
"On behalf of the program, we are very excited to welcome Scott into our St. Joe's baseball family," Hamburg said. "He brings not only a strong pitching background, having pitched in the Seattle Mariners organization for six years, but also a solid understanding and connection with our recruiting because of his high school playing days at nearby Archbishop Wood High School."
"I'm very humbled that Coach Hamburg believed in me to lead such a talented pitching staff," Boches said. "With his long tenure as the head coach on Hawk Hill, I know how much it means to him to represent the school and program well, and with that I'm ready to come in and make a positive impact on our players in our pursuit of an Atlantic 10 championship. The time to win is now, and I will do everything I can to empower our players to achieve that goal."
Boches (pronounced BO-chiz) comes to Hawk Hill from Lafayette, where he served as the Leopards' pitching coach for three seasons. During his time in the dugout, pitchers Alex Walsh (First Team) and Joe Skapinetz (Second Team) earned All-Patriot League honors in 2023 and 2025, respectively, while the Leopards reached the Patriot League Tournament in 2023. Skapinetz and former Leopard pitcher Adam Bogosian are currently pitching professionally in the Pioneer League.
Prior to his stint in Easton, Boches spent six years with the Mariners organization, posting a 3.95 earned run average and recording 9.2 strikeouts-per-nine innings across 214.1 professional innings and reaching as high as Triple-A in 2019.
Boches pitched collegiately at Marist, turning in a 6-5 record and a 2.72 earned run average to go with 85 strikeouts in 86 innings in 2017 as he helped lead the Red Foxes to the MAAC tournament title. He held Iona to one run across eight and two-thirds innings, striking out 10, in the championship game on the way to All-Tournament honors. He was also named a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award, which honors the "breakout player of the year" in college baseball, before being drafted by the Mariners in the 30th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
"Scott's playing and coaching experience has afforded him the opportunity to learn and incorporate analytics into his game while still understanding the importance of competing and experiencing success," Hamburg said. "He appreciates hard work and respects his craft. I'm looking forward to seeing the various ways he will help our pitching staff as well as our program."
"Evaluating, connecting, developing, and supporting are main principles to me when it comes to coaching; those principles, followed by a growth mindset from our players, will lead to something I'm very excited to see," Boches said. "The Philadelphia region is my home and I can't express how grateful I am to coach at such a great institution in such a great city."
A graduate of Archbishop Wood, Boches originally hails from Feasterville, Pa.
