Irwin Steps Down as Head Coach of St. Joe’s Men’s Rowing Program
PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's Vice President and Director of Athletics Jill Bodensteiner has announced that head coach Mike Irwin has stepped down from his role as head coach of the men's rowing program to accept a coaching position at the United States Naval Academy. Assistant coach Taya DiAngelo will serve as interim head coach and oversee day-to-day operations of the program.
"I'd like to thank Mike for his unwavering dedication and leadership to the men's rowing program over the past 14 years. He has built and grown our student-athletes to compete annually against the top schools in the nation," said Bodensteiner. "The men's program has also excelled in the classroom and the community under Mike's guidance, and we wish him continued success at the United States Naval Academy."
Over 14 seasons, Irwin guided Saint Joseph's through an era of growth and achievement as the Hawks earned numerous national rankings, won multiple medals at the prestigious Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta and captured consecutive Atlantic Association of Rowing Colleges Atlantic Sprints Championships (2023, 2024). This past season, the Hawks captured the Jesuit Invitational title, had three boats advance to the Grand Finals of the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta, and capped the season with the Varsity 4+ winning the Petite Final and a seventh-place overall finish nationally at the IRA National Championships.
Individually, Irwin has been an active leader at the Robert M. Gillin, Jr. Boathouse, served as a key member of the Atlantic Sprints leadership group, and was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Matt Ledwith Award by the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.
Saint Joseph's begins a national search to fill the coaching position immediately.
