Men’s Tennis Welcomes a Pair of New Additions
PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's head tennis coach Jeff Puhan has announced the addition of two new student-athletes to the men's tennis team as Davi Carlos and Jakob Gaudreau Barnes will join the Hawks this season.
"I'm really pleased with the two additions to the men's squad," Puhan said. "We added more strength to our core group; we're excited for this year."
Carlos comes to Hawk Hill from São Paulo, Brazil, where he was ranked as high as 10th in South America and 293rd in the world as a junior. On the ITF Junior Circuit, he claimed a J30 singles crown in Monterrey, Mexico, and was the runner-up in the doubles draw. He also reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles at the J100 event in Lima, Peru, and was a singles quarterfinalist in the J200 events in Bogotá, Colombia, and Punta del Este, Uruguay, earning wins over top 100-ranked players along the way. Carlos also was a G2 singles champion and a G1 and doubles champion in South America.
"I chose Saint Joseph's mainly because of Coach Jeff, whom I already knew and had trained with during the best phase of my career," Carlos said. "I trust his coaching and believe he can help me reach my highest potential again. Another important reason was the team; they were very welcoming and made me feel at home from the very beginning."
Hailing from Verdun, Quebec, Gaudreau Barnes won a J30 doubles title as a junior in Winnipeg and is also a two-time provincial doubles champion. He was also a U16 national selection champion and U18 finalist at the provincial level as well.
"I chose Saint Joseph's because it was the perfect fit in terms of location, academics, and athletics," Gaudreau Barnes said. "I was seeking a strong academic institution where I could continue competing in tennis at the highest level, and SJU checked all the boxes. Its location in Pennsylvania also provides access to high-level competition against many well-known schools nearby."
The pair will join the squad in time for the fall slate of competition.
