Women’s Tennis Welcomes Four Additions to Squad for 2025-26

Saint Joseph's head tennis coach Jeff Puhan has announced the addition of four student-athletes to the women's tennis squad in time for the 2025-26 season.  Transfer Amari O'Brien joins a trio of freshmen in Elena Fleming, Evelyn Mejia, and June Tronhus on Hawk Hill.

PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's head tennis coach Jeff Puhan has announced the addition of four student-athletes to the women's tennis squad in time for the 2025-26 season.  Transfer Amari O'Brien joins a trio of freshmen in Elena Fleming, Evelyn Mejia, and June Tronhus on Hawk Hill.

"I'm really excited about this year's recruiting class," Puhan said.  "We added some real depth on the women's side this year."

O'Brien comes to Philadelphia from Mount St. Mary's, where she played in the number-four singles slot as a freshman last season.  The Greenbelt, Maryland, native collected wins against Lehigh and Siena while adding doubles victories over conference rivals Merrimack, Quinnipiac, and Rider.

"I chose Saint Joseph's for its physical therapy doctorate program and for the tennis team," O'Brien said.  "I am looking to grow and improve in all aspects of my tennis and academic life; I believe that St. Joe's will make that happen."

Hailing from Mentor, Ohio, Fleming set the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin career wins record with 112 victories and was a state runner-up in doubles in 2024 after a fourth-place singles finish in 2021.  A two-time All-Ohio selection, she also earned the USTA's Northeast Ohio Diane McNeal Sportsmanship Award.

"Saint Joseph's has a great campus atmosphere with high-quality academics and athletics," Fleming said.  "Philadelphia is home to many sports teams, new opportunities, and exciting events.  The school also provides an excellent program for my major and I see myself thriving here."

Mejia comes to SJU from nearby Phoenixville, Pa., where she was part of the AAA state championship team at Spring-Ford in 2020.  Individually, she claimed the state doubles crown in 2023 while earning distinguished honors in each of her four years of high school.

"I chose St. Joe's because of the close-knit community, its belief in cura personalis, and the opportunity to be part of the five-year accelerated exercise physiology program, leading me on the path to become a physical therapist," Mejia said.

Tronhus is a native of Mallorca, Spain, and is a two-time runner-up in the U18 Mallorca Championship (2024, 2025).  She also claimed the runner-up spot in the 2023 U18 UTR Championship as well.

"I chose Saint Joseph's because I wanted a school that values both academics and athletics at a high level," Tronhus said.  "The strong business program, supportive environment, and competitive tennis culture made it the right place for me to grow on and off the court."

The quartet joins the Hawks in time for the start of the fall slate.
