MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's softball team opened an early lead and then held on for a 4-3 win against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Wednesday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Sierra Fretz, Meghan Sinkus and Kayla Tauber each had two hits in the game.
  • Fretz drove in three runs on a pair of doubles.
  • Three Hawks' pitchers allowed one earned run in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SJU got on the board right away as a walk by Sarah Cancila, a hit by Hailey Malito and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out. Fretz came up and lined a single past the diving third baseman that rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Cancila and Riley York to score for a 2-0 Hawks lead.
  • In the second, Jenna Currie came up with one out and drilled her third homer of the season out to left, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
  • With one out in the third, York walked in front of Fretz who cracked a double into the left-centerfield gap, plating the runner.
  • Lehigh responded, scoring three runs, two of them unearned in the fourth.
  • St. Joe's flashed the leather in the sixth as with two runners on, a ball was lined towards the middle. Calmly, Tauber knocked it down and threw out the potential tying run at the plate.
  • Jenna Wagner started and went the first 3.2 innings. Marla Freiwald (7-2) got the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
  • With the tying run on second to open the seventh, Taylor Trowbridge came on and retired three consecutive hitters for her second save of the year.
