Baseball Pummels Villanova, 17-8

The Saint Joseph's baseball team put on an offensive display on Tuesday, routing Villanova by a 17-8 score at Smithson Field.

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team put on an offensive display on Tuesday, routing Villanova by a 17-8 score at Smithson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (21-20) hung a crooked number on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring six times.  Alex Kelsey led off with a single before walks to Carson Applegate and Joey Pagano loaded the bases; Owen Petrich then followed with a two-run single that chased starter JP Podgorski from the game.

Tim Dickinson greeted reliever Pat McKenzie with an RBI double before Joey Gale walked and Aidan Duda hit a sacrifice fly to drive in another run.  Michael Pierson then ripped a two-run single to extend the lead to a half dozen.

• Villanova (20-21) got on the board in the second via an RBI single from Collin Quintano.  The Wildcats then added four in the third on a three-run home run by Jason Neff and an RBI groundout by Jake McElroy.

• Duda led off the bottom of the third with a walk, moved to second when Pierson was hit by a pitch, and went to third on a fly ball by Colin Myers; he then came in to score on a ground ball by Applegate to make it a 7-5 game.  Villanova drew level in the top of the fourth, however, on a two-run single by Neff.

• The Hawks went back ahead in the bottom of the fourth as Dickinson led off with a walk, followed by a single from Gale; after a passed ball allowed Dickinson to score and Duda drew a walk, Pierson hit his first collegiate home run to make it 11-7.

• Dickinson led off the fifth with a bunt single before stealing both second and third and scoring on a groundout by Colin Myers; Neff then led off the sixth with a double and scored on a Brayden Leonard single to put another run on the board for the Wildcats.

• The Hawks struck again in the seventh.  After walks to Myers and Kelsey, Applegate was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Petrich, who doubled in a pair.  Dickinson then rudely greeted a reliever for the second time in the game; this time, it was a three-run blast to center field that put the Hawks on top 17-8.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
Ethan Bowen allowed one hit and struck out one in an inning and a third of shutout relief to earn the win; Graham more allowed four runs on two hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss.

• The Hawks drew a season-high 16 walks, two shy of the program record for walks in a game.  Kelsey drew four walks, the most by a Hawk in a game this season, while Duda was issued three free passes.

• Kelsey, Petrich, and Dickinson all recorded three hits on the day, with Kelsey reaching base in all seven of his plate appearances.  Dickinson scored four times, with five other Hawks scoring two runs apiece; each Hawk in the starting lineup scored at least one run on Tuesday.

• Pierson led the way with five runs batted in; Petrich and Dickinson each chipped in with four RBI apiece.
