MERION STATION, Pa. – Five first-half goals powered the Saint Joseph's field hockey team to a 6-1 win over Lehigh at Ellen Ryan Field on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Quickly! Milou Kluyt tallied her first goal of the season just 69 seconds into the game on a direct corner feed from Brooke James and Emily Tammaro.
• Carly Hynd opened her Hawk account nine minutes later as she scooped up a rebound off of a saved effort from James and fired high into the cage for a 2-0 lead.
• Saint Joseph's (6-3) doubled the lead early in the second quarter as James scored on a corner after 81 seconds; Erika Culp then deflected a ball from Tammaro past the keeper a minute and 23 seconds later to make it a 4-0 game.
• Ava Smith scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season midway through the frame, dribbling just over the line into the circle before firing low to the left for a 5-0 halftime lead.
• Lehigh (1-7) got on the board through a deflection by Maddie Kandra with nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but Lily DeWan scored her first collegiate goal three minutes later, taking a pass from Culp and spinning for the finish in front of the cage, to set the final margin.
