PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit on Saturday afternoon, using a 9-2 run to help push past St. Bonaventure in a 15-9 victory on Sweeney Field.

The Hawks honored 14 seniors and graduate students following the game as part of the senior day double-header with the men's lacrosse team.

St. Joe's moves to 8-7 on the year and improve to 7-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while St. Bonaventure falls to 9-6 with a 5-3 conference record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sarah Groark found a crease near the goal after a feed from Alexa Capozzoli helped equalize only 17 seconds after the Bonnies struck first just over five minutes into the contest.
  • A pair of goals from St. Bonaventure gave the visitors a 3-1 lead before a near-mirror image of the opening goal was duplicated as Groark netted her second of the frame to reduce the gap to 3-2 after the opening quarter.
  • St. Bonaventure's Brooke Piper alternated goals with Capozzoli to open the second frame before jumpstarting a two-goal burst to double the Bonnies lead at 6-3 with 9:33 remaining in the half.
  • The Hawks responded as Riley Miller led a 3-0 run to end the half with a deep shot from near the 12-meter arc that found the corner of the netting. Maddie Yoder scored her only goal of the first half before Miller scored from a free-position attempt a minute later to tie the game up at 6-6 entering the halftime break.
  • St. Joe's continued its momentum with the first three goals of the second half, Yoder leading the charge with a strike after an interchange with Kate Fuhrman gave the senior an open lane to cash in on her second of the game.
  • Groark completed her hat trick, all three goals off an assist from Capozzoli, nearly a moment later to push the Hawk lead to 8-6. Fuhrman distributed to Yoder again as the Oreland, Pa. native also found her hat trick in the opening five minutes of play.
  • Goals from Piper and Fiona McGowan cut the gap to just one goal, but the Hawks closed out the last five minutes of the third quarter with a pair of goals from Yoder while Miller found the mark to register her third of the game to give the Hawks a 12-8 lead with 15 minutes to play.
  • A consolation goal from the Bonnies opened the scoring in the final frame, but goals from Fuhrman, Emma Yoder and Capozzoli pushed the Hawks over the finish line to grab the seventh win of the conference campaign in a 15-9 fashion.
