PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team held Richmond to a season-low output on Saturday afternoon, the defense propelling the Hawks to a 13-8 victory in a rainy afternoon on Sweeney Field.

St. Joe's finishes the regular season at 10-7, recording a 9-1 record in Atlantic 10 play to secure the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Richmond falls to 10-7 on the season with a 7-3 record in the A-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Maddie Yoder's 50th goal of the season opened the scoring for the Hawks, breaking up a two-goal spurt from Richmond to begin the contest.
  • The Spiders added a goal to increase the lead to 3-1 before a moment of magic from Sarah Groark gave the Hawks a response 50 seconds later. The senior was the first to a loose ball near the crease, scooping up the ball and flicking behind her shoulder as the attempt evaded the goalkeeper and found the back of the net.
  • Yoder's second free-position goal of the first quarter equalized the score at 3-3 as neither team were able to break through over the final 8:10 of the frame.
  • Richmond scored in the opening 45 seconds of the second quarter before Kate Fuhrman finished off an assist from Alexa Capozzoli on the ensuing possession.
  • The Spiders regained a two-goal advantage, matching a game-high for the visitors, with under eight minutes to play after Colleen Quinn and Charlotte Edwards found the back of the net.
  • St. Joe's used a 3-0 advantage over the final 5:33 of the quarter to take its first lead of the game. Fuhrman scored again off a dish from Capozzoli before a long-distance effort from Megan Sanelli tied the game at 6-6. Yoder's hat trick capped off the offense in the opening half to help the Hawks take a 7-6 lead into the break.
  • The Crimson and Gray limited Richmond to just two shots in the third quarter, Jorden Concordia standing tall in net for the Hawks to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. During the frame, the offense added two goals from Yoder and Groark to extend the advantage to 9-6 headed into the final 15 minutes.
  • Edwards scored under two minutes into the fourth quarter to try and get the Spiders back into the game, cutting the lead to 9-7 in favor of SJU.
  • The Hawks closed the door on any chance of a comeback, scoring the next four goals over a six-minute span.
  • Sanelli registered her second goal of the day to start the run, followed shortly by a goal off a woman-up advantage after Capozzoli turned scorer for her only tally of the afternoon.
  • Emma Yoder secured a five-goal advantage with under eight minutes to play before Fuhrman capped off her hat trick with a goal a minute later to push the Hawks to a 13-7 lead.
  • A consolation goal with a minute remaining was all Richmond could muster as the Hawks clinched second place for the upcoming A-10 Tournament with a 13-8 victory on Sweeney Field.

GAME NOTES

  • Sarah Groark registered her 11th multi-goal game of the season with her two goals on the day, while Megan Sanelli's pair of goals was her second multi-goal game in her career.
