Baseball Pounds George Washington, 12-4, in Series Opener
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team opened its weekend series with a resounding 12-4 win over George Washington at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (22-23 overall, 15-10 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the top of the second as Owen Petrich led off with a solo home run. Later in the frame, a single by Joey Gale scored Blake Primrose to double the lead.
• The Revolutionaries tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Sam Gates.
• The Hawks regained the lead for good in the third as Petrich singled and Primrose and Joey Pagano drew walks to load the bases; Aidan Duda ripped a first-pitch double to score two and make it a 4-2 game. He struck again in the fifth as Tim Dickinson singled and stole second before scoring on a Duda single that extended the lead to three.
• SJU opened up some breathing room in the sixth. Gale was hit by a pitch before Alex Kelsey walked and Carson Applegate was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Pagano followed with an RBI single before Petrich roped a two-run base hit to give the Hawks an 8-2 lead.
• George Washington (25-23 overall, 12-13 Atlantic 10) got a pair back in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Gates and a single by Ty Acker, but the Hawks answered in the eighth. Kelsey walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Applegate walked and stole second himself. Pagano then hit another RBI single before a sacrifice fly by Petrich made it 10-4.
• In the ninth, Duda reached on an error before Michael Pierson and Gale loaded the bases with singles; two batters later, Applegate singled through the left side to plate two and set the final margin.
